Purpose is perhaps the most powerful force that drives us. At least in my opinon it is. We all have the inner yearning to be wanted, to feel accomplished in life, to feel like what we are doing is important. This does not change as we age. In fact, I believe it becomes stronger and even more of an emphasis for our lives.
At our home located in Sebring, Florida (kenilworthcare.com) , purpose is alive and well. The home initiated a “program” last year to revive purpose into the lives of the Elders who live there again. The program, Blue Angels, provides the Elders of the home with volunteer opportunities within the home. The Elders who take part in this program, don a blue vest that is assigned to them when they are accepted to be part of the elite group.
Their most recent success story highlights Ms. Edna. Ms Edna proudly declares how this program has enriched her life. She said, ” Before I felt like a sick little old lady and now I feel more important than ever!” What a beautiful testimony from a precious Elder who was just searching for her place at Kenilworth. She can be found during the days at the computer, typing up the activities bulletins for the day or giving out hugs to those who are in need of a “pick me up”.
Edna’s doctor even declares that the program has changed her life. She said that before admission to the home and her work in the program Edna just wanted to curl up and die.
We can never underestimate the power of purpose in our lives. Is purpose truly the key to overall wellness in our lives? I can’t answer that but I bet Ms. Edna can!

Great article of encouragement to us. I believe this is the greatest challenge for the chaplains in helping residents to discover their purpose. We have one resident in particular that needs some type of involvement and myself and Leah, our QoL director, have been struggling to find something that he can do. Starting next month, he will be leading a weekly prayer group. He talked with his pastor about it and is extremely excited!
Linda, that is wonderful. It is a challenge but when you find the right fit for the Elders who live there, then it will change their life and those around them! Keep up all your good work at Hermitage. Tell Leah hello for me.
