Love your pets? So does Pickett Care and Rehabilitation located in Byrdstown, TN.
I can’t imagine moving to a different home without my labradoodle. He has become quite the companion to me over the past few years! Unfortunately many seniors moving into long term care facilities are forced to abandon their pets behind without even a thought as to where they will go or who will care for them. This is simply not the case at Pickett.
They made the decision when they admitted an Elder recently who just couldn’t imagine the idea of living without his dog. The leadership team came together and decided to work out a plan in which the dog could actually move into the home with the Elder.
I am convinced we can do so many things, if we only take the leap to start it. Challenging ourselves is part of our growth. We may fail but failing doesn’t always mean not succeeding. In fact, many times, by failing we pave the road to success more clearly.
Eden Alternative Principle #2 discusses the idea of creating a human habitat. A place where growth abounds and people can nurture those things they love. This is a prime example of how one Elder in one home will be able to continue a life long relationship with his dog. His purpose, his identity, and his joy all remain intact as he transitions in his new home. That’s the way it should be.

I am so grateful this vision could be realized for this Elder. A big THANK YOU from all of us animal lovers!!
Now this is what I imagine as “Quality of Life”! I pray this catches on like wildfire in all homes!
I feel the same way about my “Jake”. He is a companion and friend who greets me when I come home and offers so much love. It is a simple pleasure that I would greatly miss if I have to be separated from him. You are so right Angie – it can be a challenge to overcome the obstacles, but if at first you don’t succeed…..well, we just can’t give up. This picture says it all. Great accomplishment at Pickett!!!
This is a wonderful example of resident-centered care. Now both the Elder and his dog can continue to love and enrich each others lives instead of enduring a forced painful separation which would have negatively impacted both. Kudos to Pickett Care and Rehabilitation!
This would be so awesome if animals were to be allowed to stay with their owners…they wouldnt ever feel alone.. I vote YES
Great Story!
Thanks Pam!
Pets give us that unconditional love we all crave. I know my life would be less if not for pets in my life. Especially my dogs. I know of many resident’s lives would be enriched if they had their pets with them.
Put my name on the list to go to Pickett when I need a nursing home! I want to take my dogs too. This is a great story, and this picture brought tears to my eyes. There is such a bond between these residents and their dogs – it just makes sense. Thanks Angie, for sharing a great story.
