Signature residents enjoy Greek food, shark feeding during ‘staycation’

Residents from five communities under Signature’s Urban South segment recently enjoyed a ‘staycation’ at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

The group that made the outing included residents and caregivers from: Gulfport Rehabilitation Center, in S. Pasadena, FL; SHC of Pinellas Park; Golfview Healthcare Center, in St. Petersburg; Southern Pines Healthcare Center, in New Port Richey, FL; and Peninsula Care & Rehab Center, in Tarpon Springs.

The Sponge Industry helped build a Greek Community that is now famous not only for the world’s finest sponges, but for some of the finest Greek restaurants, markets and bakeries in the country. Almost 50 of us enjoyed eating a delicious Greek meal at the famous Hellas Restaurant. After great service for lunch, the group took a stroll on the streets and enjoyed the beautiful fresh air and scenery.

At the end of the day the group visited The Tarpon Springs Aquarium, and got adventurous by feeding the sharks and sting rays. The group watched a demonstration by the aquarium as they were feeding and swimming with the sharks.

“I am 96 years old and lived in Florida for over 50 years and have never been here before,” said one resident from Gulfport Rehab. “What a beautiful place – thank you for taking me here!”
