Silver Angels Life Coach Program

One of the great synergies we have as the Spirituality Pillar is our utilizing the skills of our Chaplain Corps for all manner of pastoral care to many people in need, not just in our facilities themselves, but in other ways as well.

Silver Angels is our non-medical home care specialists in TN and as such they have partnered with our Chaplain Corps to provide at home spiritual care to their customers, as in the case of the “Life Coach Program. Bryan Smith, our Chaplain at Pine Ridge Care & Rehabilitation Center in Elizabethton, TN explains in the video below:

Spirituality Activated: Solutions – Chaplain’s Return To Hospital Reduction Program

RTH

Based on goal setting accomplished this year with facility administrators, the Spirituality Pillar is developing and piloting new programming to further address specific needs in our facilities.

One of the major initiatives for Signature HealthCARE of Pinellas Park was in improving its Return to Hospital numbers. With this goal in mind, their chaplain designed a program to track and measure intensified spiritual intervention efforts directed towards the areas of customer and family satisfaction in an attempt to reduce “customer experience”-related RTH cases.

The case study involved two groups of residents, one which received normal levels of chaplain care with the second receiving “increased bedside attention” with the assistance and cooperation of all other departments in support. Strong emphasis was placed upon increasing stakeholder engagement through listening and encouragement with a goal of seeing whether more frequent and intensive interventions with more engaged caregivers could make a measurable impact on the rate of discharges returning to hospital.

While the effects of the study on the actual RTH levels were mixed, the exercise itself was extremely impactful in raising patient/family satisfaction and stakeholder engagement overall. The full details of the case study can be found

Spirituality Activated: Solutions – Chaplain’s Stakeholder Recognition Program

PAT ON BACKBased on goal setting accomplished this year with facility administrators, the Spirituality Pillar is developing and piloting new programming to further address specific needs in our facilities.

One program called the “Pat on the Back Recognition Program” was pioneered at Signature HealthCARE of Buckhead. It utilizes chaplain-managed, weekly public recognition sessions for “above and beyond” stakeholder customer service in targeted locations throughout the facility in an attempt to help reduce turnover levels over time.

The program was designed, and evaluated via case study, to address issues of facility wide turnover levels with special efforts made to track and evaluate the program’s effectiveness over time on Total Turnover Cost. This was done in partnership with Human Resources and with the full cooperation of both the operations and clinical teams so as to further assist in the management of this significant issue.

While the findings of the study show a marked seasonality in turnover numbers, the results so far have been very encouraging. The full details of the case study can be found HERE.

Spirituality Activated: Solutions – Chaplain Pain Reduction Program

Chaplain Pain Reduction Study

Based on goal setting accomplished this year with facility administrators and clinical teams, the Spirituality Pillar is developing and piloting new programming to further address specific clinical conditions in our facilities.

One program being developed at Signature HealthCARE of Lafayette utilizes chaplain-led, specialized intervention efforts to help reduce pain levels for selected residents.

The program was designed, and evaluated via case study, to address issues of reported high levels of pain among new admissions in an attempt show that customized chaplain interventions, based upon focused and attentive spiritual care, prayer and a listening presence, and in partnership with clinical efforts and prescribed medications, can have a significant positive impact on pain levels for those in need.

By utilizing MDS data, and under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, all new residents were surveyed by the chaplain within 24 hours of their admission and, based upon their levels of pain, were categorized into various spiritual treatment groups. This was done so as to best assign the differing levels of attention they would be targeted to receive from the chaplain during the subsequent 90 day period.

A multitude of spiritual techniques were used during the study, such as centering and intercessory prayers, calm breathing exercises and many others, in an attempt to bring comfort and personalized attention to those in need, so as to better soothe their spirits and promote their own inner healing. This was done with the full cooperation of the clinical teams so as to further assist in their ongoing pain management efforts.

The findings of the study have been very encouraging so far with the results so far showing a 13% decrease in pain levels for those receiving the specialized chaplain care. The details of the case study can be found HERE.

Spirituality Activated: Solutions – Fall Prevention Clinical Partnerships

raise me up

Fall Prevention Clinical Partnership

Based on goal setting accomplished this year with facility administrators and clinical teams, the Spirituality Pillar is developing and piloting new programming to further address specific clinical conditions in our facilities.

One program developed at the Bridge at Rockwood entitled “You Raise Me Up” utilizes chaplain-led, specialized interventions for applicable residents to prevent falls.

The program was designed, and evaluated via case study, to show that customized chaplain care based upon focused one-on-one visits and personalized prayer interventions can help decrease anxiety so as to have a positive impact on incidents of falls for those at risk. The details of the case study itself can be found HERE.

During the case study period, the chaplain made repeated one-on-one visits with each of these individuals and applied both direct prayer and continuous encouragement to them towards this specific issue, so as to relieve their anxiety issues by seeking divine assistance and comfort applied to their areas of concern.

The findings of the study were promising in their results with all residents responding well to the interventions. The chaplain’s efforts had the effect of not only preventing any increase in falls for those participating but also of actually reducing fall levels for well over half of them during the case study period.

Spiritual Freedom And Permission To Pray

Permission to Pray was borne from the actions of a precious Housekeeping stakeholder at Kenilworth Care and Rehab (Sebring, FL) who saw that a family member and new resident were sitting on the bed hunched over, and crying.

A new place, the unknown, fear…Not knowing what to expect. The stakeholder asked if she could come into the room, then asked the two if she could pray with them. The three held the hands of a unified circle and prayed for healing, restoration and peace. A calm pervaded and a tender joy with deliberate peace was restored. Tears dried and smiles came and conversation ensued because of the simple kindness of one.

Permission to Pray came from the bold approach of a stakeholder who saw a need, who listened to that still small voice and approached in compassion. You have permission to pray, if you choose.

This is a revolution of many who can meet a need with the power of a singular force: love, compassion and prayer.

– Dianne Timmering, Vice President of Spirituality and Culture

Below is a presention developed by the Spirituality Department and presented by Signature Vice President of Spirituality Dianne Timmering which illustrates the importance of what Spirituality means at Signature.

Permission to Pray is about the freedom to pray and worship based on meeting individuals at the point of their need, based on spiritual preferences and faith traditions. It is about the right to worship or not to worship but the freedom to choose. Spirituality is one of three cultural foundations of Signature HealthCARE, LLC based in Louisville, KY.

Daily Morning Prayer For Stakeholders at Cleveland, TN Facility

One of the very best services our chaplains provide, and one which we sometimes forget about, is the ministering to our stakeholders in the buildings with whom they interact with on a daily basis.

This is something that is seen so clearly in the new program being done at our facility in Cleveland, TN. Chaplain Carl Caffrey explains:

I have heard from many stakeholders that they would like a daily prayer time.

We just launched it this week. As a matter of fact, I am writing this note right after our Friday prayer time.

It will meet M-F (five days a week) at 9:30 ish (right after Stand-up mtg) each day.

We have had a great response already!

Support Group for Signature Home Office

The Department of Spirituality would like to announce a new program being offered here at the Home Office to provide support for anyone who may be dealing with issues like addiction problems (in their own lives or in their personal relationships), bereavements (recently or otherwise) or other  life problems wherein a non-judgmental ear and a safe, confidential environment would be helpful.

We will be offering five hour-long sessions for anyone who might wish to attend from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM here at the Home Office on the following dates:

Wednesday January 16
Thursday January 31
Thursday February 21
Thursday, March 7
Wednesday March 20th

These sessions will each be held in Rev Room C/D and are all independent from each other and are intended as discussion and sharing sessions. They will be moderated by Karen Veith who will be assisted by Stephen Bowling. Karen has long wanted to help people in this area as she has been personally affected by addiction issues in her own family and Stephen has training in bereavement counseling and ministry to the addicted through his role as a Deacon for the Archdiocese of Louisville.

This support group is intended to be just that – support – and is not meant to take the place of any professional help a person might need to seek. The facilitators are not licensed counselors and seek only to provide a safe place where friends can freely and confidentially discuss how the burdensome issues have affected their lives and seek comfort and solace in the sharing.

For those who may be interested in benefiting from this program, but who do not feel comfortable or are simply unable to attend, various resources and general questions and answers concerning relevant subjects discussed will be posted here on the Spirituality blog shortly after each session takes place.

Also, should anyone wish to speak privately (and confidentially) concerning issues in this area, please feel free to directly contact either Karen at kveith@signaturehealthcarellc.com or Stephen at sbowling@signaturehealthcarellc.com.
