“How Great Thou Art” by Chaplain David Steppee

“O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.” Psalm 92

In the year 1886 a poem was written about the greatness of our God.

In the process of time, this poem has grown and visited a vast majority of the world. Just a few years after its creation these words were translated into the German language. And in the year 1925 they found their way to America and were translated into the English language. In 1927 they found their way into the nation of Russia and yet this Swedish poem would remain the same.

And so in 1933 this poem was turned into a song. And in 1939, the song found its way to England and spoke comfort to her people during WWII.

And after the war, now this song would grow even more, from a Swedish folk tune to now having a finished fourth verse. In the 1950’s Americans would begin to fall in love with this song and would become greatly familiar with the words.

This song was sang at almost every Billy Graham Crusade and soon would become one of the most recognized hymnals of all time. And finally in the year 1974 a Christian Magazine conducted a poll and named this song as the most popular hymn in America.

At Houses of Worship throughout the world, this humble poem makes the ominous declaration “How Great Thou Art”!

Prayer: Today, Lord let us continue in our journey for our God. Let us claim our hour and be confident in the greatness of our God. Like this poem and her humble beginnings, lets us know that no matter our situations, wars or depressions, it is You, our God who is so truly GREAT!
