Another Chance to Win

Another Chance to Win

Recently, we were at a well-known restaurant that has a Checker game set up for those that are waiting for a table. My son and I sat down and began to play this long time favorite pass time. After the first few moves, it became evident that we were trying to out think each other. The pauses, and resting the finger on the game pieces as we were making sure we didn’t miss anything, it was a friendly competition.

We are both competitive and perfectionist, so the thought that either of us would make a dumb move was more than we could take. When I made one of the crazy moves, I was shocked at how I didn’t see that I was setting up his next play to take one of my pieces! The slow smile on his face and the emphasis that he made with his next move, was triumphant! He was just waiting for me to trip up. Even though I had thought each play out, I still made mistakes that cost me the game.

That’s life! I know the game. I try to be strategic, plan, be prepared for others mistakes, all the while, I’m convinced that I have my game pieces all lined up. And then… And then… I make a mistake, a thoughtless word, I assume something, someone sets me up and I feel like a big dummy! I should have seen it coming… but I didn’t.

This is when I go to God’s word and read:
Philippians 3:13-14 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single-minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

I have assurance that even in my mistakes, that if I look forward, there’s always another chance to win at the game of life! I can’t wait for the next game of Checkers!
