Ansering the Call

SACRED SIX: COMPASSION MESSAGE

Answering the Call

“This poor man called and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles.” Psalm 34:6

Many times when we think of the word ‘poor’ we associate it with financial destitution, but being ‘poor’ really only means to be without something that is needed or wanted.

One particular day I answered 16 call lights, only three of which were clinical in which I could not directly assist. In my mind, the needs of the residents were simple requests – such as getting a cup of coffee or some ice, picking up the phone from floor, turning on the radio or making sure their lunch request was honored. While I may have considered these requests to be small or even insignificant, they were greatly needed and appreciated by those who needed me to do them.

A CNA once shared with me her idea of how she considered God to be found in the answering of call lights. She came to this understanding on one occasion when she went in to assist a resident and shortly after she had done so she had a heart attack right then and there. The resident pressed the call light as the Director of Nursing was walking through the halls and she answered the call just in time to provide immediate assistance.

At times, we may ignore the prompting of God’s Spirit, but on that day God did not allow for that call to be ignored . . . and a life was saved.

God’s call may not always prompt us to major or life-saving situations, but we are still called to small daily duties that can be of great service to others. It may be as simple as writing a letter of encouragement to those who need it, giving someone a ride to work, attending a child’s special day at the school . . . or answering a call light. As Psalm 99:6 states – “They called to the Lord, and He answered them”.

Lord, thank you for answering our prayers when we call upon You. We ask that you continue to move us to yield and obey when You call upon us . . . and to help others who are in need. Amen.
