Today kicks off National Activities Professionals Week. This year’s theme is “Oh the Places You Will Go” based off the children’s book by Dr. Seuss. At first thought this theme may be silly but to me it is so appropriate.

Almost as if it were yesterday, I can remember my first day in this role. I was excited but scared all at once. I wanted to do my best for the Elders I served and had so many ideas to bring change. As with so many Activities Professionals out there, my “work” quickly consumed my life. In fact, my days, nights and weekends were all dedicated to bringing purposeful engagement to the Elders I served. I was as addicted to it as any drug addict could ever be.

I soon realized I wasn’t alone. There was an army of people out there in this profession with hearts bigger than Texas and enough ideas to keep us all busy for years. Those people are the amazing Activities Professionals I have been blessed enough to know. The people who taught me to enjoy every moment with our Elders, whether large or small. The people who inspired me to stay strong when adversity came knocking. The very ones who crowded around and supported each other in every victory or step forward. The people who became my tribe.

To all my fellow Activities Professionals, today as we kick off our week, please know that your drive to forever change this industry has not been overlooked. The passion you have when you plan every special event to create moments of joy in each of your communities, will never be without reward. The dedication you portray to facilitate purpose and meaning will never be taken for granted.

So, as you can see, “Oh the Places You Will Go” is really quite remarkable. The distance you have traveled so far has changed countless lives for the better but the journey ahead of you will forever change this industry. The book highlights fear, obstacles and the courage to overcome them all. That is the strength of this profession.

So as this celebration of YOU begins, take some time to reflect on the journey this year. Chart your course and set your sails because there’s a magical adventure in store!
