“Instruments of Peace” by Chaplain Michael Bushey

Question: Are our words, thoughts, and actions producing God’s unity with each other?

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! – Psalm 133:1

If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. – Mark 3:24

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27

The following anonymous prayer was found in Normandy in 1915, written on the back of a holy card of St. Francis, from which its name comes.

Peace Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
when there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying [to ourselves] that we are born to eternal life.
