“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” 1 Corinthians 1:20 (KJV)
When my children were young I remember how they would come to me and ask for something. Sometimes it was a “special” something that they needed or wanted – sometimes it was something they just had to have! Most of the time I would give my consent by simply saying “okay”. My son would usually take my word as a final decision and go on his way knowing that everything was okay. My daughter, however, for some reason needed a little more reassuring so she would almost always ask the follow up question “Daddy, do you promise?” I would give a thumbs up sign to her and that would be all she would need for peace of mind; my promise was final and for her there was no way Dad would ever break his promise!
When I think back to those early days of my life, and how trustworthy I always tried to be to my children, I realize just how much they depended on me for so much. Those realizations always remind me of the many times I have gone to my Heavenly Father and asked him to take care of my needs. The difference between my prayers and my children’s, however, is that I don’t have to say to God “Do you promise?” God has already spoken to me and proven beyond a shadow of doubt the dependability of his promises. I trust and rest in this fact.
Prayer: Lord help us to have the faith of a grain of mustard seed, which is so tiny, yet grows so great that the birds have a place for their lodging in the branches, not because they asked, but because you promised!, Amen.
