“We Are What We Think” by Chaplain Steve Looper

Finally, my brothers and sisters, always think about what is true. Think about what is noble, right and pure. Think about what is lovely and worthy of respect. If anything is excellent or worthy of praise, think about those kinds of things. 9 Do what you have learned or received or heard from me. Follow my example. The God who gives peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9 NIRV

I was taught in elementary school the slogan “you are what you eat”, I’ve adopted a similar slogan “you are what you think”. In the passage of scripture I’ve shared today we’re reminded what type of things we should be thinking and concentrating on daily. Not only will what we think give us great attitudes, it also directs our paths. And if that is not encouraging enough, we also have the promise that when we think this way that God will make sure we enjoy peace as well as His presence.

Father please help us think on the things that are noble, right, pure, lovely and worthy of respect knowing that you are always with us giving us the peace we so desperately seek. Amen!

“Do Not Worry” by Chaplain Steve Looper

“I tell you, do not worry…” Matthew 6:25a

Would everyone who finds themselves worrying about _____________ (you fill in the blank), please raise your hand.

According to the Washington Post… “54 percent of Americans are concerned about the level of stress in their everyday lives. 62 percent of Americans say work has a significant impact on stress levels. 73 percent of Americans name money as the number one factor that affects their stress level. Increasing numbers of children, teenagers and college students report feeling under stress.”

Matthew 6 has long been a favorite passage of mine. Now more than ever, as I find myself in the “middle of life” (46), I’m coming to better understand why. It’s so easy to worry, isn’t it? But honestly, what has worry ever accomplished? My answer and yours is probably the same, “nothing”. Let’s all begin this new year with the intentional decision to 1. Stop worrying, 2. Diligently do all we know to do, and 3. Simply and whole-heartedly trust God in and with all things, knowing He has a fulfilling purpose for ALL things.

Love Is The Key

…” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and most important commandment. 39 And the second is like it. ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ 40 Everything that is written in the Law and the Prophets is based on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37b-40

I believe the goal of all of God’s commandments is to establish, guide and maintain healthy relationships, first, our relationship with God and secondly, our relationships with others. These two commandments teach us that if we will love God with ALL that we are and have then our relationship with Him will be a strong and secure relationship. Secondly, if we will love others as much as we love ourselves then all those relationships will be equally as strong and secure. It’s imperative to understand that the key word that is conveyed here is the word “LOVE”. Love is the key ingredient in establishing, guiding and maintaining all lasting relationships both earthly and Heavenly.

Prayer: Heavenly Father thank you for loving me. Please teach and empower me to love you supremely as well as love all others the way you unconditionally love me. Amen!

First Things First

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. 14 I will be found by you,” says the Lord. Jeremiah 29:11-14a

Each of us possess a personal perception of who God is. But the truth of who God really is has been fully expressed in His Word. It’s here each of us can personally see, hear and
experience God as He is. God tells us in this particular passage that He has plans for each of us and those plans are good. He also adds that He has provided opportunity for us to have a purposeful future that is full of hope. He promises that if we will wholeheartedly look or Him He will be easily found.

Prayer: Heavenly Father thank you for loving and caring for me as You do. Thank you for revealing Yourself to all of humanity. Please give me the faith to trust You for the plans and future You desire for me and may I forever be found loving You supremely as I love others as much as I love myself. Amen!

First Things First

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33-34

I have personally treasured this passage of Scripture for many years now. As I read this passage once again, I’m reminded that we live very busy and complex lives. It seems as if something or someone is always competing for our time and attention, demanding to have first place. This “warring” for our attention always carries with it the ability to create chaos, worry and fear pulling and turning the focus of our attention away from where it truly belongs, a place of peace and rest.

If we would only choose to seek God first, His Kingdom, and His righteousness then we could be confident that we have His Word and His promise that EVERYTHING we need will be freely given to us eliminating the temptation to worry about anything. When we freely choose to seek God first and foremost, realizing He is our greatest need, then and only then will everything (life’s daily necessities) and everyone (all our relationships) fall right into place.

Heavenly Father please give me the faith and trust I so desperately need to allow You to have Your rightful place in my life, first and foremost in all I do and pursue, Amen!

Be Blessed!!!
